Explore the Abercorn Archaeology Site through this colorful, illustrated historical fiction book based on the archaeological data recovery at the Abercorn Archaeology Site (9CH1205). The book is actually two-books-in-one, back-to-back in the same binding with a charming centerfold image linking them. The stories are 11 pages each, with a color image on every page.
Discover 19th century life through the eyes of Enitan, an African American child who grows up at the Abercorn Site. Work with Vicenté, the son of an archaeologist who helps the archaeology crew uncover Enitan’s story almost 150 years later. Learn how both stories are interconnected and what role an actual 400 year old live oak tree growing on the site played in the book.
While 8-10 year olds will revel in reading this book, younger children will enjoy studying the images and reading along with an adult. Likewise, older children and adults will appreciate the illustrations, text, and underlying themes woven through both stories of Vicenté and Enitan. The book provides an engaging, yet subtle way to introduce and elaborate on many topics in a child-friendly manner. A few of these topics include science (curiosity, hypotheses, research, and documentation), history (Civil War, Gullah-Geechee culture, preservation, and maps and documents), and values (friendship, love, courage, loyalty, hard work, and diligence).
Digital copies of this book are available for you to download or print. The “digital download” version is low resolution, quick to upload, and suitable for viewing electronically. The “digital printable” version is high resolution, a bit slower to download, and has each of the two stories in a separate file (due to the nature of the original being a back-to-back upside down/right side up book). We hope you enjoy Tell Me Tree! If you are an educator, please visit our “Curriculum” page on this website for a free downloadable version of the associated 4th grade curriculum, “Archaeology Under the Live Oaks: A 4th Grade Multidisciplinary Curriculum”.
